The United States incarcerates more of its population than any other country in the world. And within the United States, Louisiana and more specifically New Orleans, leads in the number of people behind bars or under supervision. Nearly 120,000 people, 2.6% of Louisianians are impacted by the justice system. People of color are disproportionately affected by the criminal justice system. Even though the Black population only makes up about 1/3 of the general population, it makes up 2/3 of the prison population. In New Orleans, 1 in 7 Black men is justice-involved.

Incarceration takes a toll on people's bodies and minds and individuals are particularly vulnerable during the re-entry period. In fact, studies show that there is a 12-times increased chance of death in the first 2 weeks after release. We at the FIT Clinic wish to change these statistics by ensuring patients have ready access to medications and health services. However, patients still face multiple challenges, including lack of insurance or funds to pay for medications, transportation and communication barriers leading to delays in accessing services.

The FIT Clinic provides financial assistance to cover the cost of medications, critical diagnostic studies, transportation to and from clinic and
co-pays when necessary.

Please consider donating today so we can continue providing this essential service.
